WIU Resident Assistants Participate in Fire Training with Macomb Fire Dept.
August 18, 2025

MACOMB, IL - - In preparation for move-in at Íæż½ã½ã, Resident Assistants (RAs), who are the primary leaders on each residence hall floor, engaged in numerous training sessions throughout the week to ensure readiness for the academic year ahead.
As part of training, in conjunction with the Macomb Fire Department, the RAs were able to learn from firefighters on how to use a fire extinguisher and extinguish a live fire, experience smoke out conditions inside a building and watch how much faster a fire can grow in a room with no sprinkler system as opposed to one with a sprinkler system. Assistant Fire Chief Adam Rhoades spoke to the RAs about fire safety and what to do in certain scenarios.
RAs also attended a training session on leadership and social change with Jennifer Borrero from Campuspeak, founder of the Youth Housing Coalition. Borrero currently serves as the United Nations Association at the national level as a Global Goals Ambassador. Borrero spoke to the RAs about the importance of building a community on their residence hall floor and how they can have a positive impact on their peers throughout their time at WIU.
WIU RAs are excited to welcome new and returning Leathernecks to campus beginning at 8 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 21.
