June 5, 2025

Just Hired! Through the experiences of local, regional, national and international students, Íæż½ã½ã has some incredible alumni who are changing the world in the workforce. This series will feature students from all over the world who are hired post-graduation.
MACOMB, IL - - Meet Emily Ferreyra, a Íæż½ã½ã Counseling graduate, who recently accepted a position at Urbana Middle School.
"I will be part of a team of middle school counselors," Ferreyra said. "Urbana Middle School houses grades 6-8, with a counselor at each grade."
After applying for the position through the school's website, Ferreyra had an interview to demonstrate her experience for the position and stand out as a candidate.
"There was a panel of current employees who asked me questions regarding the role. Specifically, they were interested in my experiences with collaborating and how to handle crises," Ferreyra said. "They let me know they had another applicant to interview. They also called my references and then decided to pursue me as their future counselor. I received an email stating they wanted to offer me the position. I then followed up with human resources and started the onboarding process to get ready to start my role in August!"
During her time at WIU, Ferreyra acquired foundational skills and received meaningful guidance that will help her succeed in her upcoming counseling career.
"At WIU, I learned not only the core skills of being a school counselor, but also how to network and build connections with others in the field," Ferreyra said. "I wouldn't have been able to thrive if it had not been for my professors, supervisors and peers who offered their support and knowledge. WIU has led me to be connected with amazing people!"
Ferreyra plans to stay involved with WIU by continuing to support the Bilingual Early Learning and Family Center and sharing her experience with future counselors.
"I have been a graduate assistant during my time at WIU with the Bilingual Early Learning and Family Center. I hope to be able to support them as they grow," Ferreyra said. "I also look forward to coming back to support future counselors as a guest speaker or as a resource they can reach out to."
